St Aloysius College is now a Deemed-to-be University

St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore was raised to the status of Deemed-to-be University (SADU) by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, on January 17.

In a gazetted notification, the Ministry of Education stated that “in exercise of powers conferred under Section 3 of the UGC Act, L956, the Ministry of Education, on the advice of UGC, hereby declares St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru as an Institution Deemed to be University in the name of St Aloysius, Mangaluru for an initial period of five years.”

The Mangalore Jesuit Education Society (MES), the sponsoring body of SADU, in a meeting convened on January 25, passed a resolution congratulating St Aloysius College and wished all success. Meanwhile, the chancellor of SADU and provincial of Karnataka Jesuit province, in consultation with the MJES, has appointed a thirteen-member Executive Council of SADU. The Executive Council (EC) is the highest decision-making body of SADU. The EC comprises of the Vice Chancellor in-charge Dr (Fr) Praveen Martis SJ, who is the chairman of the Council. Dr (Fr) Melwyn D’Cunha is the pro VC in-charge. The other members are Dr (Fr) Melwyn Pinto SJ, Fr Marcel Rodrigues SJ, Dr (Fr) Kiran Cotha SJ, Dr (Fr) Victor Lobo SJ, Dr (Fr) Charles Lasrado SJ, Dr Cletus D’Souza, Dr Rajani Suresh, Dr Ronald Nazareth (Registrar in-charge and secretary), Dr Manuel Tauro and Dr Manahor V. Serrao.

In his opening remarks, Chancellor Fr Vaz called upon the EC members to be proactive in deliberating on various aspects that concern the growth of the newly formed SADU. He congratulated VC in-charge Dr (Fr) Praveen Martis SJ in persisting with the efforts to make St Aloysius a deemed-to-be university. “Now that St Aloysius is a deemed-to-be university, we have far greater challenges ahead of us. It is important that St Aloysius keeps growing and becoming a model university,” he said.
