Remembering Fr Rossi Rego

Fr John Baptist de Rossi Rego SJ, a Jesuit of Karnataka province for 65 years, died on June 1 at Fatima Retreat House, Mangalore. He was 86-years old.
Fr Rego was the mission procurator of Karnataka province for 14 years. Besides, he was also counsellor trained with a degree in psychology and counselling from Massachusetts, USA.
The funeral ceremony of Fr Rego was held on June 3, officiated by Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ, provincial of Karnataka province. The homily was preached by Fr Ronald Pais SJ. In his homily, Fr Pais highlighted the child like heart of Fr Rego, much like that of Jesus, and his love for children and child psychology.
In his panegyric, Fr Joseph Rodrigues said that Fr Rego was more than just a priest; he was a beacon of compassion and wisdom. “His dedication to serving others, especially the poor, knew no bounds. In his tireless pursuit of excellence, he touched countless lives through his ministry of counselling, spirituality and retreats. He was a God-sent right hand to the Provincials. The province cannot thank him enough for the tireless work he has done as mission procurator, for 14 years, and left an indelible mark on our missions by his advocacy for the marginalized and the excluded,” Fr Rodrigues said.
He further added that Fr Rego a multifaceted personality. “He could sing a variety of songs, with ease in multiple languages. He used to be the real joy during the celebrations and common gatherings. Without looking for limelight or popularity, he would do quiet and hidden work in the true gospel spirit,” he said.
