Mundgod mission consultation held; focus on collaboration and team work

The Karnataka Jesuit province hosted a mission consultation at Mundgod on August 10, led by Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ, provincial. In his keynote address, Fr Vaz emphasised the critical role of collaboration among mission partners, highlighting issues such as holistic healthcare, migration, and value-based education in Mundgod. He recalled the initial choice of the Jesuits of Mundgod, namely work among the Siddis, as their mission focus, due to the area's remoteness and the community's marginalised status. He stressed that community participation and collective responsibility were vital for sustainable development.
During the consultation, key concerns were raised, including the need for stronger leadership among the Siddis and better faith formation. Presentations on the milestones of the Sisters of Charity, Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross, and the Society of Jesus in Mundgod were followed by a SWOC (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges) analysis, which brought forth discussions on issues such as overlapping works, staff capacity, and the need for greater community involvement.
Group discussions revealed the mission's strengths, including a strong focus on target groups, good infrastructure, and a collaborative spirit. However, limitations such as financial constraints, a move towards project-based rather than community-based approaches, and a lack of qualified staff were also highlighted. Suggestions for improvements included more regular consultations, joint ventures, and a renewed focus on holistic health, youth engagement, and leadership development.
The consultation concluded with a call to action from Fr Vaz, who urged mission partners to avoid compartmentalising their work, rather to rework agreements between congregations, and prioritise pastoral care. The need for ongoing collaboration, communication, and strategic planning were emphasised as the mission looked forward to its future endeavours in Mundgod.
Consultors of the provincial, twinning partners from St Aloysius Mangalore, among others, were present.
