A barefoot counselling training programme was held at Vidyaniketan, Dharwad, on June 26 bringing together teachers from six institution comprising 35 educators, including religious sisters, teachers, and educators. This programme was facilitated by Fr Pratap Chandru SJ and Fr Joyson Vaz SJ.

The training focused on essential topics such as listening skills, basic counselling skills, the process of counselling, and role plays. The sessions were designed to equip participants with the fundamental skills needed to address and support the mental health issues of their students effectively.

The primary objectives of the programme were to help educators understand the importance of mental health for students, learn basic counselling skills, and gain practical experience in handling simple mental health cases. Through interactive sessions and hands-on activities, participants experienced the value of mental health and were able to practice their new skills in a supportive environment.

The training emphasised the significance of listening as a crucial counselling skill. Participants learnt how to listen empathetically and non-judgmentally, creating a safe space for students to express their concerns. Additionally, basic counselling skills, including skills to establish rapport, ask open-ended questions, and provide appropriate feedback were covered in detail. Role plays and case studies were a significant part of the training, allowing participants to simulate real-life scenarios and apply their newly acquired skills. This practical approach helped them build confidence in their ability to manage simple mental health issues among students.

Certificates were issued to all the participants by both the resource persons at the completion of this training programme.
