Joseph Nivas: New Jesuit Residence Inaugurated and Blessed in Hassan

Hassan, February 28, 2025 – A momentous occasion unfolded at St Joseph’s Institution, Hassan, as the Jesuit community celebrated the inauguration and blessing of Joseph Nivas, the new Jesuit residence and chapel. The event, held on February 28, was marked by a solemn yet joyous gathering of clergy, religious and well-wishers.
The inauguration was officiated by Fr. Dionysius Vaz, SJ the Provincial, who ceremoniously cut the ribbon and unveiled the commemorative plaque. Following this, Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Swamy, the Bishop of Chikmagalur, led the prayer of blessing, invoking divine grace upon the newly constructed residence. Members of the Jesuit community also took part in blessing the building, signifying their shared commitment to its mission.
A significant highlight of the day was the blessing of the newly built chapel, which took place during a solemn Holy Eucharist. The chapel, designed to serve the spiritual needs of the staff, students, and Catholic families in the neighborhood, was consecrated in a deeply reverent ceremony. Fr. Edward Rodrigues delivered an inspiring homily, while approximately 70 priests concelebrated the liturgy, adding to the grandeur of the occasion.
Following the religious ceremonies, a short felicitation program was held to honour individuals who played key roles in bringing this project to fruition. The bishop and provincial were recognized for their unwavering support and encouragement. Special appreciation was extended to Fr. Daniel Fernandes, SJ the former Superior, whose meticulous planning and vision set the foundation for the structure.
Several professionals involved in the construction and design of Joseph Nivas were also honoured, including architect Mr. Chandan Kumar (VIBGYOR, Mysore), civil contractor Mr. Vijay Kumar (Eastern Associates, Bangalore), site engineer Mr. Balu, electrical contractor Mr. Murali B, and interior designer Mr. Simon Joseph (Maria Constructions & Interiors, Bangalore). Additionally, the contributions of Fr. Jason Furtado, SJ the province treasurer, and Fr. Joseph Monteiro, SJ the provincial’s representative for the construction, were acknowledged. Benefactors who generously supported the chapel’s development were also felicitated.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Fr. Henry Saldanha, SJ who expressed deep gratitude to all stakeholders for their unwavering dedication and support. The inauguration of Joseph Nivas marked a significant milestone, ushering in a new chapter for the Jesuit community in Hassan and reinforcing their commitment to faith, service, and education.
