On November 16, 2024, the Karnataka Jesuit Province bid farewell to a beloved servant of God, Fr Devadatta Kamath SJ, who passed away after a life rich in devotion, scholarship, and pastoral service. Born on November 8, 1934, Fr Kamath joined the Society of Jesus on June 8, 1955, was ordained a priest on March 24, 1966, and pronounced his final vows on February 2, 1974. Over nearly seven decades as a Jesuit, he made indelible contributions to the Church, the Society, and society at large through his tireless work and enduring legacy.
A Ministry of Dedication
Fr Kamath’s ministry spanned diverse roles, reflecting his profound commitment to the Jesuit mission. Whether as a warden at St Aloysius College, Mangalore (1969-71), chaplain at Bhadravati (1971-72), or professor at St Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore (1973-94), he devoted himself fully to the spiritual and intellectual formation of others. He was a teacher, a retreat leader, a historian, and a guide to generations of Jesuits and lay faithful alike.
Later in his career, Fr Kamath delved into the retreat apostolate, historical writing, and pastoral care. As the province historian and archivist, he meticulously documented the history of the Karnataka Jesuit Province, leaving behind an unparalleled treasure trove of knowledge. His work extended to leadership roles, including as dean of juniorate studies in Mundgod (1995-96) and assistant minister at AIMIT, Beeri (2011-12).
Scholarly Contributions
Fr Kamath’s intellectual pursuits were not confined to his teaching duties. A prolific writer, he authored several seminal works, most notably The Burning Bush: The History of Karnataka Jesuit Province (Parts I & II), a multi-volume magnum opus chronicling the history of the Jesuits in Karnataka. Parts of this series remain in the process of publication, a testament to the magnitude of his historical project.
Other notable works include Defiant Submission: A History of the Diocese of Mangalore (Vols. I & II), Janakana Manadanna – Kristayana, and Dharmakanda. His scholarly rigor combined with his deep faith produced writings that will continue to inspire and inform for generations.
A Man of Simplicity and Holiness
Beyond his academic and pastoral achievements, Fr Kamath’s life was marked by simplicity, humility, and a deep spiritual anchor. His years of convalescence at Fatima Retreat House, Mangalore (2015-2024), were characterized by prayer and quiet reflection, embodying the Jesuit ideal of finding God in all things. His last phase of life lived at Santhrupti of Fathima Retreat House in Mangalore has been a testament of fulfillment. A literary legend has just left us, leaving a trail of knowledge of the Church and Jesuit history etched out for generations to come.
Legacy
Fr Kamath’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy endures in the lives he touched and the works he left behind. Through his dedication to teaching, writing, and ministry, he enriched the Karnataka Jesuit Province and the broader Catholic community. His life reminds us of the profound impact of faith, intellect, and service.
As we remember Fr Devadatta Kamath SJ, we honor a life well-lived in the service of God and humanity. May he rest in peace.
