Navasadhana Pre-Novitiate
Navasadhana, meaning “new path”, is the pre-novitiate program of the Karnataka Jesuit Province for young men discerning a vocation to become Jesuit priests or brothers. It is the first stage of Jesuit formation, offering a time of discovery, prayer, and preparation before entering the novitiate. At Navasadhana, candidates—often called Navasadhanites—are guided to deepen their vocation, grow spiritually through Ignatian prayer, and experience the richness of Jesuit community life.
Over the years, the program has functioned from different centers, with a strong base in Hassan and earlier roots in Bangalore. Alongside spiritual formation, candidates continue their education, often at St. Joseph’s Pre-University College, Hassan, while also developing personal skills such as music and creative arts. Community life plays an essential role, as candidates learn to live, celebrate, and serve together in the Jesuit spirit of companionship.
The pre-novitiate acts as a gradual transition from lay life into the structured formation of the novitiate, giving both the candidate and the Jesuit community time for mutual discernment. In essence, Navasadhana is the doorway into Jesuit life, nurturing young men to listen to God’s call and preparing them for the mission of faith and service in the Society of Jesus.
