Asha Kiran Scholasticate, Mangalore

Ashakiran, the study house of Jesuit scholastics in Mangalore, started in the year 2000, is a generous response of Karnataka province to the repeated requests of the provincials of Northern provinces to start a study house for their scholastics. Ashakiran was first located in Mathias compound, Kaprigudda, Falnir Mangalore till May 2006, and later it was shifted to a new location, Sylveliz Kripa, near Pumpwell, Kankanady, constructed on the land donated to us by Mr. Edmund D’ Sa and his family in memory of his parents late Mr. Sylvester and Mrs. Elizabeth D’Sa. In its present location Ashakiran has completed 13 years on August 15, 2019. Over the years, Ashakiran has become quite popular and demand to accommodate more scholastics has increased. Presently, there are 39 scholastics and three Jesuit staff members.

Life in the spirit is considered quite important at Ashakiran. Hence they try to maintain a good spiritual atmosphere. With its rich diversity Ashakiran community represents the Assistancy well. There are scholastics from thirteen different provinces including Sri Lanka and East Timor. To foster the apostolic spirit among scholastics and moreover, to be in touch with the suffering world, weekend ministries are arranged to a number of places like parishes, orphanages, home for the aged and children’s homes. Ashakiran is basically a study house of scholastics. Hence a conducive atmosphere for study is fostered. Ashakiran shares good rapport with its neighbours. Some of them hold their celebrations – birthdays, death anniversary, and thanksgiving masses at Ashakiran. Ashakiran extends invitation to them especially on August 15th which is celebrated as Foundation day.
