We draw our inspiration ultimately from Our Lord Jesus Christ who went about doing good to everyone everywhere, particularly to the last, the least and the lost. Secondly it is St Ignatius of Loyola, the Founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) who is our inspiration. Having renounced a life of power, pleasure and possessions, he gave himself totally to Jesus Christ and lived the Gospel values of simplicity, sacrifice and selfless service reaching out to the weak, the wounded and the weary. His Mission has been expressed today for us in the evocative words: “Service of Faith and Promotion of Justice”, or, more simply put, “Preferential option for the Poor”. Following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ after the example of St Ignatius of Loyola, the Jesuits of Karnataka spend themselves in the service of the broken, battered and bleeding everywhere through their education, social, spiritual and other ministries. We are also inspired by the history of the Society of Jesus during the nearly 500 years of her history which is a rich legacy of signal service in every field of human endeavour in every country, culture and continent to people of every caste, class, creed and colour. Many Jesuit stalwarts of the past and in our own day have left behind large footprints which we try to tread.
